Annual Conference of the Society for Inverse Problems took place from 8-10.11.2023 in Würzburg

Würzburg. From November 8 - 10, the annual conference of the Society for Inverse Problems took place in the heart of Würzburg at the Juliusspital Conference Center Zehntscheune. The conference was organized by the Professorship of Inverse Problems at the Chair of Scientific Computing at the University of Würzburg.

The aim of the German-speaking Society for Inverse Problems (GIP) is to promote scientific research in the field of inverse problems and to represent this field at national and international level. To this end, the society awards a prize every two years for the best doctoral thesis in the field of inverse problems in German-speaking countries and regularly organizes international workshops in the tradition of the Chemnitz Symposium on Inverse Problems.

The Chemnitz Symposium on Inverse Problems was launched in its current form in 2002 by Bernd Hofmann and has since been held annually in Chemnitz or at various "on tour" locations around the world. The symposium is also traditionally an opportunity for young researchers to present their work to the community.

"I am very pleased that we have succeeded in bringing this renowned conference in a current and important field of research to Würzburg this year," says Professor Frank Werner, holder of the Professorship of Inverse Problems and Managing Director of the Institute of Mathematics. "Once again this year, there were a particularly large number of young scientists among the four invited and a good 20 other lectures."

Over the three days, around 50 participants discussed current methodological topics such as regularization theory and inverse scattering problems as well as their applications in the life sciences.

To mark the 70th birthday of the founder of the Chemnitz Symposium, Bernd Hofmann (Emeritus Professor at Chemnitz University of Technology), a session dedicated to him was held on Thursday afternoon. The laudatory speech was given by Professor Alfred K. Louis from Saarland University, Saarbrücken. Prior to this, the first chairman of the GIP, Prof. Dr. Thorsten Hohage (Georg-August-Universität Göttingen), thanked Bernd Hofmann on behalf of the Society for Inverse Problems for initiating the Chemnitz Symposium and continuing it after his retirement.
