This is a genuinely historical talk based on a paper written with Norbert Mauser from the Wolfgang Pauli Institute in Vienna and published in the EMS -NewsLetter 2018. First we discuss the influence of physical applications. Then we described the emergence of modern mathematic in the subject, with emphasis on some topics like the averaging lemma and the Wigner transform.
